17th WIRE workshop on EU Environmental Policy and Law – updates
The 17th WIRE workshop, themed « EU Environmental Policy and Law – updates, » will serve as a platform for scholars and practitioners to delve into contemporary environmental challenges within the European Union (EU). Hosted in Brussels, Belgium, on the 5th and 6th September 2024, this 2-day event, co-organized by Amandine Orsini and Eleni Kavvatha from UCLouvain – Saint-Louis – Bruxelles, and by François Thoreau from the Université de Liège will focus on discussions revolving around scientific papers aiming at updating the scientific publication « European Union Environmental Law and Policies: Current Insights and Future Challenges » edited by Amandine Orsini and Eleni Kavvatha with Routledge. The workshop aims to explore recent developments and future challenges in EU environmental governance, aligning with the evolving geopolitical landscape post-events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Participants will engage in interdisciplinary dialogues addressing critical environmental issues, from climate change to waste management, with a spotlight on emerging concerns like nuclear waste management, disaster management, and youth perspectives on environmental governance. Invited scholars and practitioners both from Belgium and abroad, senior and junior, will present papers on diverse topics including climate change policies, energy policy, agriculture and biodiversity, ocean governance, chemicals and hazardous waste policy, trade and environment, Arctic governance, and youth engagement in environmental governance. Each presentation will be followed by discussions led by designated discussants, fostering interactive exchanges and deeper insights into the presented topics. The workshop will also feature a conclusion session to synthesize key insights and potential future research directions. The interdisciplinary nature of the event encourages cross-sectoral collaboration and knowledge exchange, enriching the discourse on EU environmental governance. The 17th WIRE workshop promises to be an intellectually stimulating event, offering valuable insights into the current state and future trajectory of EU environmental policy and law. By bringing together experts from various disciplines, the workshop aims to foster innovative solutions and enhance understanding to address the complex environmental challenges facing Europe and the world.

Le 17e atelier WIRE, dont le thème est « EU Environmental Policy and Law – updates », servira de plateforme aux universitaires et aux praticiens pour approfondir les défis environnementaux contemporains au sein de l’Union européenne (UE). Organisé à Bruxelles, en Belgique, les 5 et 6 septembre 2024, cet événement de deux jours, co-organisé par Amandine Orsini et Eleni Kavvatha de l’UCLouvain – Saint-Louis – Bruxelles, et par François Thoreau de l’Université de Liège, se concentrera sur des discussions autour de papiers scientifiques visant à remettre à jour la publication scientifique « European Union Environmental Law and Policies : Current Insights and Future Challenges » éditée par Amandine Orsini et Eleni Kavvatha chez Routledge en 2020. L’atelier vise à explorer les développements récents et les défis futurs de la gouvernance environnementale de l’UE, en s’alignant sur l’évolution du paysage géopolitique après des événements tels que la pandémie de COVID-19 et l’invasion de l’Ukraine par la Russie. Les participant.e.s s’engageront dans des dialogues interdisciplinaires sur des questions environnementales cruciales, des changements climatiques à la gestion des déchets, en mettant l’accent sur des préoccupations émergentes telles que la gestion des déchets nucléaires, la gestion des catastrophes et le point de vue des jeunes sur la gouvernance environnementale. L’atelier rassemble des chercheur.e.s et praticien.ne.s invités, belges et étrangers, seniors et juniors.
